FREELANDER 8 international drive: what Canadians should know

FREELANDER has put its new FREELANDER 8 through its first international media drive in Wuhu, China, but Canadian availability has not been announced. The manufacturer-led event offered invited international journalists a controlled look at the large electrified SUV’s all-terrain systems ahead of an expected UAE launch in the first quarter of 2027.
For Canadian readers, the important distinction is simple: this was an international and Middle East-market preview, not a Canadian launch. FREELANDER has not announced a Canadian distributor, price, certification program, Natural Resources Canada rating or sales date.
What happened in Wuhu
According to the FREELANDER/Chery release, invited media drove the international FREELANDER 8 during the 2026 Chery International User Summit. The course included mud and gravel, hill climbs, water crossings and cross-axle obstacles.
Those descriptions come from the manufacturer. Speedhounds did not attend the drive, and this article does not present the event as an independent road test.
The technology FREELANDER is promoting
The company highlighted its i-ATS Intelligent All-Terrain System, with a Smart mode that selects terrain settings as conditions change, as well as a Super Intelligent Valet Parking system planned for selected markets and subject to operating conditions.
The November media-drive release does not provide a full Canadian-relevant powertrain specification, battery capacity, official fuel-consumption figure or independently tested driving range. Those figures should not be inferred from a controlled international preview.
What the off-road demonstration actually showed
On a dedicated course, invited journalists encountered mud, gravel, a steep ramp, water obstacles and cross-axle terrain. The release does not substantiate specific wading-depth, ground-clearance or grade-climbing figures, so Speedhounds is not presenting such figures as verified specifications.
What the name means
As outlined in the brand’s global-launch announcement, FREELANDER is being developed through Chery’s relationship with Jaguar Land Rover. The companies’ public communications describe JLR as the owner of the FREELANDER name and the collaboration as a new product program for selected international markets. The current vehicle should not be confused with the former Land Rover Freelander sold in earlier decades.
What Canadian shoppers should watch
- A confirmed Canadian distributor and dealer network
- Transport Canada certification and market-specific safety equipment
- Natural Resources Canada fuel-consumption and electric-range ratings
- Canadian warranty, service and parts support
- Canadian pricing and final trim specifications
Until those details are announced, the FREELANDER 8 is best understood as an international-market electrified SUV moving from brand reveal toward regional rollout. The Wuhu drive shows that development is advancing, but it does not establish a Canadian sales plan.
