2027 Toyota Sequoia Canada: Trailhunter Joins the Lineup

The 2027 Toyota Sequoia reaches Canadian dealers with a sharper exterior, more towing intelligence and a new Trailhunter grade aimed at factory-built overlanding. Prices start at $91,250 MSRP for the SR5 TRD Off-Road, while Trailhunter starts at $95,552 and TRD Pro at $109,851.
Every Canadian Sequoia uses Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. The lineup spans eight configurations, from an eight-passenger SR5 TRD Off-Road to premium Capstone and highly specialized Trailhunter and TRD Pro models.

Hybrid power is standard
The i-FORCE MAX system combines a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor-generator for 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft. Toyota quotes a maximum towing capacity of 9,121 pounds. That figure describes the best-equipped configuration, not every Sequoia, and should never replace the rating on the exact vehicle.
For a family SUV this large, the standard hybrid’s value is immediate low-speed torque rather than EV-style operation. Buyers should compare the payload label with the combined weight of passengers, luggage, accessories and trailer tongue load. A full cabin can reduce the available margin for a heavy trailer.
Trailhunter brings factory overlanding hardware
Built from the SR5 TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter adds 18-inch bronze wheels with 33-inch Michelin all-terrain tires, Old Man Emu shock absorbers, an aluminum skid plate, Rigid dual-colour fog lamps, two front recovery hooks, Trailhunter upholstery, an LED cargo light and model-specific badging. Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select and a locking rear differential are standard.
For Canada, Toyota lists Trailhunter in Lunar Rock with a Black interior. The narrow colour choice reinforces that this is a focused package rather than a broadly configurable luxury trim. Its $4,302 MSRP premium over SR5 TRD Off-Road buys integrated hardware covered within the new-vehicle package, but shoppers should still compare ride comfort and tire noise during a test drive.
TRD Pro gets adjustable FOX shocks
TRD Pro takes a different approach. New Sequoia-specific FOX QS3 shocks allow quick damping adjustment for rough terrain and higher-speed use. Red recovery hooks are standard, and Honeycomb joins the paint palette. TRD Pro also carries a substantial price premium, so its suspension, protection and styling make the most sense for owners who will use them rather than simply wanting the appearance.
Trailer assistance becomes more intelligent
- Automated Trailer Detection uses rear cameras and radar to detect a trailer, estimate its dimensions and populate the Trailer Garage profile in the multimedia system.
- Trailer Blind Spot Monitor extends the detection area to account for the trailer’s length.
- Trailer Lane Trace Assist provides steering support tuned for towing and can compensate for certain crosswinds, uneven roads and lane splits.
- Trailer Backup Guide adds dynamic guidelines, a slider interface, semi-automated steering assistance and jackknife-risk support.
These functions can reduce workload, but they do not change the physical limits of the SUV, hitch or trailer. Confirm availability on the chosen grade and learn the system with a light, empty trailer in a controlled area before depending on it in traffic or at a crowded campsite.
Interior, technology and family features
The SR5 TRD Off-Road begins with an eight-passenger bench-seat layout. It includes a 14-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, eight-speaker audio, heated power front seats, leather upholstery, driver-seat memory, three-zone climate control, moonroof, heated steering wheel, wireless charging, Digital Key 2.0, 120-volt outlets, trailer brake controller and Toyota’s multi-camera off-road view.
Higher grades trade some seating capacity and add richer materials, premium audio and convenience equipment. Platinum and Capstone can be ordered with towing mirrors. Because the hybrid battery and third row shape the cargo floor, families should test the exact combination of child seats, stroller, luggage and third-row access rather than assuming full-size exterior dimensions guarantee a flat, unrestricted cargo area.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and rear-seat detection
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard, with updated sensing hardware supporting Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist.
The 2027 Sequoia also introduces an Advanced Rear Seat Reminder. A millimetre-wave radar in the headliner can detect movement in the second or third row after the vehicle is parked and the driver exits. Depending on conditions and an active Safety Connect trial or subscription, warnings can escalate from chimes and hazard lights to the horn, app alerts, text messages or an automated call. It is a backup system, not a substitute for checking the cabin every time.

Speedhounds take
The Sequoia now covers three distinct buyers: large families who tow, overlanders who want factory-installed protection, and premium-SUV shoppers who still need truck-based capability. Trailhunter is arguably the most meaningful addition because it creates a clearly defined middle ground below the more expensive TRD Pro.
Canadian shoppers should choose by use case, not trim hierarchy. Confirm seating capacity, payload, tow rating, mirror package and third-row cargo fit on the exact vehicle. For a daily driver, also check garage clearance, turning space, winter-tire cost and fuel consumption. No feature list can substitute for loading the family’s real gear into the SUV before purchase.
